The first research sessions that led to the conceptualization of Manga theatre began in the now extinct MA for Performance studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama, in the year 2000. After receiving an award at a performance festival in the Czech Republic it became an independent research project within CSSD involving performers from India, Portugal, UK, Greece, Iran and USA.
In Portugal Manga Theatre became a part of an international performance summer school as an independent discipline, from 2003 till 2007. As a tool to explore and enhance devised material it was used in several performances from 2002 till 2011. It’s one of the main research projects at a centre for performance and artistic studies supported by local funds.
Manga Theatre has always been an impulse towards the unknown and uncharted territories.
